About this course

Pharmacy is the science and practice of medicines, encompassing the development, preparation, and safe dispensing of drugs, and the clinical role of pharmacists in advising patients and healthcare teams about optimal medication use. Pharmacists are the medicines experts within the healthcare system, drawing on deep knowledge of pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, and clinical therapeutics to ensure that patients receive the right medicines in the right doses, with appropriate monitoring and support. The profession is being expanded in the UK to give pharmacists an increasingly prominent role in direct patient care, prescribing, and public health.

At University College London, this five-year full-time degree integrates pre-registration training within the programme, meaning that the supervised practice experience required to register as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council is built into the degree itself rather than being completed separately after graduation. This integrated route accelerates your path to registration and provides a coherent programme that moves seamlessly between academic learning and professional practice. You will develop a thorough grounding in pharmaceutical sciences, including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, pharmaceutics, and pharmacy practice.

Clinical and communication skills are developed throughout, and you will gain experience across community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and other healthcare settings during your integrated training periods. UCL's position within a major London teaching hospital network provides access to exceptional clinical environments and patient populations.

Qualifying as a pharmacist from UCL opens careers in community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, primary care, and clinical academia. The profession offers strong employment prospects and considerable variety in practice, from dispensing and patient counselling to medicines optimisation, prescribing, and pharmaceutical research. Many pharmacists pursue postgraduate study or independent prescriber qualifications to extend their scope of practice, and academic pharmacists contribute to research in drug development, clinical trials, and medicines safety.

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local …
