About this course

Philosophy and statistics might appear to be disciplines at opposite ends of the intellectual spectrum, but they share a deep concern with the nature and limits of knowledge. Philosophy asks foundational questions: what can we know, how can we justify our beliefs, what makes an argument valid, and what do concepts like truth, probability, and causation actually mean? Statistics provides rigorous tools for answering empirical questions, drawing inferences from data and quantifying uncertainty.

Together the two disciplines give you an unusually powerful combination: the analytical precision of mathematical reasoning and the critical depth of philosophical inquiry.

At St Andrews this four-year MA (Hons) programme introduces you to the major traditions of philosophical thought, both historical and contemporary. You will study logic, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and metaphysics, developing the skills of close argument and principled debate that philosophy demands. The statistics strand builds your ability to work rigorously with data, covering probability theory, statistical inference, and the mathematical foundations of quantitative reasoning.

The year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international institution and broaden your exposure to different research traditions and academic environments.

The combination is particularly valuable for anyone interested in the philosophy of statistics and probability, data science ethics, the foundations of artificial intelligence, or empirical social science. Increasingly, questions about how data is collected, interpreted, and used have philosophical as well as technical dimensions, and graduates who can engage with both are unusually well equipped for roles that sit at that boundary.

Graduates move into careers in data science and analytics, research, actuarial work, financial analysis, policy, academia, and the technology sector. Many go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, statistics, data science, or interdisciplinary programmes in cognitive science or the philosophy of science and mathematics.
