Philosophy and Education

Philosophy and education is a pairing that might seem abstract at first, but it is in practice one of the most directly relevant combinations for anyone who wants to understand how learning works and contribute to it. Philosophy brings the tools of logical analysis, critical argument, and conceptual inquiry to bear on the fundamental questions that underpin education: what is knowledge, how should we teach, what is the relationship between education and justice, and what does it mean to prepare young people for adult life? Education as a field then grounds those philosophical questions in the practical realities of schools, classrooms, learning, and child development.

At Keele University, this three-year full-time BA blends logical analysis, textual criticism, and independent thinking with a deep exploration of educational theory and practice. Through debate and critical discussion, you will develop the ability to tackle complex ideas and apply them to the context of teaching, learning, and the wider education system. The programme places a strong emphasis on collaboration and leadership alongside intellectual development, preparing you for a career in teaching or in roles working with young people.

A sandwich year gives you structured professional experience, a year abroad broadens your intellectual and personal perspective, and work placement experience is built in throughout, ensuring the degree connects philosophy and education at both the theoretical and practical levels.

You will graduate with a set of highly transferable intellectual skills alongside the subject knowledge to engage with education from a well-informed, critical perspective.

Graduates go on to careers in teaching (with further training), education policy, community and youth work, educational research, social work, human resources, and a wide range of professional roles where the ability to think clearly and communicate well is valued. Many pursue postgraduate teacher training, and some continue to research or doctoral study in philosophy of education or related fields.
