Philosophy and History of Art and Visual Culture

Philosophy and the history of art and visual culture together form a discipline that asks the deepest questions about what images and objects are, what they mean, and why they matter. Art history and visual culture provides the tools to read, interpret, and analyse visual works across cultures and historical periods, understanding how they were produced, how they circulated, and what role they played in the societies that made and used them. Philosophy brings the conceptual rigour of aesthetics, epistemology, and ethics to bear on these questions, asking what art is, how knowledge of the past is possible, and what value visual culture holds.

At Royal Holloway this three-year full-time degree draws on the research expertise of staff in the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, engaging with the key phases in the development of art history and visual culture across Europe and Latin America, from medieval times to contemporary practice. You will develop skills in visual analysis and critical interpretation, studying across a range of media including photography, film, and other visual forms alongside more traditional art historical objects. The programme includes a sandwich year with professional experience, a year abroad that allows you to engage with art and visual culture in a different national context, and work placement opportunities that connect your academic training to professional practice in galleries, museums, or the cultural sector.

Graduates go on to careers in galleries and museums, heritage organisations, auction houses, arts administration, cultural journalism, education, and a wide range of roles in the creative and cultural industries. The combination of philosophical depth and art historical breadth is valued wherever serious critical engagement with visual culture is required. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in art history, aesthetics, curatorial practice, or related disciplines.
