Philosophy and Politics

Philosophy and politics is a natural combination for those who want to think rigorously about the principles underlying social and political life. Philosophy gives you the tools for conceptual analysis and normative argument, asking foundational questions about justice, rights, equality, freedom, and the legitimacy of authority that political discussion often assumes rather than examines. Politics examines how power is actually organised and exercised in the world, how governments form and function, how policies are made, and how political change happens.

Together, the two disciplines develop the ability to move between normative argument and empirical analysis, which is an increasingly rare and valuable intellectual capability.

At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme gives you a grounding in both areas at a level that takes each seriously. In philosophy you will engage with ethics, political philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of mind, developing the analytical skills to dissect arguments, identify hidden assumptions, and construct your own positions carefully. In politics you will study comparative government, international relations, democratic theory, and the empirical study of political behaviour and institutions.

The interplay between the two is a distinctive feature of the programme, and your most interesting work will often be at the point where political questions demand philosophical answers, or where philosophical claims need to be tested against political reality.

Graduates of philosophy and politics are well placed for careers in the civil service, policy analysis, journalism, law, international organisations, and political parties and campaigning organisations. The analytical precision of the philosophy training is valued across many professional fields, and the political knowledge provides context and substance. Many graduates pursue further study in philosophy, political science, public policy, or law, and the combination is a recognised preparation for the Diplomatic Service and for postgraduate programmes at leading institutions in the UK and internationally.
