Philosophy and Portuguese

Philosophy and Portuguese is a combination of remarkable intellectual richness, pairing one of the most rigorous disciplines of the mind with a language that opens access to one of the world's most linguistically and culturally significant communities. Philosophy trains you in the systematic examination of foundational questions about knowledge, existence, morality, and reason, developing the ability to construct and evaluate arguments with precision and to think clearly about the most difficult problems human beings face. Portuguese gives you fluent access to the literary and intellectual traditions of Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, and other Lusophone cultures, as well as to contemporary political and cultural life across the Portuguese-speaking world.

Oxford's four-year full-time Philosophy and Portuguese programme is taught through the tutorial system, which places you in regular close academic dialogue with specialist philosophers and Portuguese linguists and scholars. In philosophy, you will engage with the core of the discipline including logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind, reading primary texts and constructing your own arguments under sustained critical scrutiny. In Portuguese, you will develop language proficiency from your level of entry through to advanced fluency, reading Camoes, Pessoa, and contemporary Brazilian and Lusophone writers in the original, and engaging with the history and culture of Portuguese-speaking societies.
