Philosophy and Russian

Philosophy and Russian is a combination of two disciplines that offer entirely different but complementary ways of engaging with the human condition. Philosophy provides the rigorous analytical tools to examine arguments, identify assumptions, and engage with the fundamental questions about knowledge, ethics, metaphysics, and political life that have occupied thinkers across the centuries. Russian opens a window onto one of the world's great literary and intellectual traditions, a culture of extraordinary depth that produced Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, and Pushkin, as well as major contributions to mathematics, science, music, and political thought.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year programme familiarises you with the views and arguments of the philosophical tradition, both historical and contemporary, while developing the critical and analytical skills to assess arguments independently and with genuine rigour. Studying philosophy is understood as acquiring skills of criticism and analysis, clear thinking, and principled debate. Your Russian studies will develop linguistic fluency alongside a deep engagement with Russian literature, history, and culture.

The programme includes a year abroad, spent in a Russian-speaking environment, which is essential to developing the level of linguistic and cultural immersion that genuine fluency requires.

Graduates with philosophy and Russian are well placed for careers in journalism, broadcasting, international relations and diplomacy, the civil service, education, translation and interpreting, cultural organisations, and academic research.
