Philosophy and Sociology
Philosophy and sociology is a pairing that brings together two disciplines with complementary concerns. Philosophy asks the fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, mind, and meaning, using argument and conceptual analysis as its primary tools. Sociology examines how human beings live in societies and how social structures, institutions, inequalities, and cultures shape individual lives and collective outcomes.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme takes you on an exploration of both the big questions of fundamental human importance and the ways in which social life shapes who we are. You will engage with philosophical logic, ethics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and political philosophy, alongside sociological accounts of class, inequality, gender, culture, and social change. The combination develops rigorous analytical thinking alongside an empirical and critical understanding of social structures and processes.
The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and to encounter different intellectual traditions and cultural contexts. The typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the academic demands of the programme.
Graduates of philosophy and sociology are well placed for careers in research, policy, the civil service, education, the voluntary sector, journalism, social work, human resources, and any professional context where the ability to think clearly about complex human situations is valued.
