Philosophy and Sociology

Philosophy and sociology together offer two of the most fundamental tools for understanding human life. Philosophy examines the deepest questions about knowledge, reality, morality, and the nature of mind, asking what we can know, what exists, what we ought to do, and what it means to be a person. Sociology investigates how societies are organised, how social structures and institutions shape human life, and how factors like class, race, gender, and power produce patterns of inequality and change.

Together, they train you to think carefully, argue rigorously, and analyse social life from both its conceptual and its empirical dimensions.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this programme is studied part-time, with flexible study modes allowing you to balance your studies with other commitments. You can study at an accelerated pace or at a slower rate by taking fewer modules per week compared to full-time study. You will engage with major philosophical traditions and arguments alongside sociological theory and research methods, developing both the abstract reasoning of philosophy and the evidence-based analysis of sociology.

The combination is particularly powerful for anyone interested in ethics, social justice, politics, education, or the nature of institutions.

Graduates of philosophy and sociology go on to careers in education, social research, policy analysis, journalism, law, public sector management, community development, and a wide range of roles that require the ability to think critically about complex human and social issues. The rigour in argument and analysis that the degree develops is valued by employers across many sectors. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, sociology, social work, or related disciplines.
