Philosophy and Spanish

Philosophy and Spanish is a degree that combines the analytical discipline of philosophical inquiry with the language and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, one of the largest and most diverse linguistic communities on earth. Philosophy trains you to reason carefully about fundamental questions: what can we know, how should we act, what is the nature of reality, and how does language relate to thought? Spanish gives you access to rich literary and intellectual traditions spanning Spain and Latin America alongside the practical fluency to engage with one of the world's most widely spoken languages.

At the University of St Andrews, you will be familiarised with many of the views and arguments discussed in the philosophical tradition, covering both historical and contemporary work, and you will develop the means to assess arguments rationally and independently. Studying philosophy here means acquiring genuine skills of criticism and analysis, of clear thinking and principled debate. The Spanish strand develops your linguistic competence alongside your understanding of the cultures, histories, and literatures produced in Spanish across different continents and periods.

The degree runs over four years on a full-time basis and includes a year abroad, which for a languages degree is invaluable: living and studying in a Spanish-speaking country deepens your fluency and cultural understanding in ways that simply cannot be replicated in the classroom.

This combination prepares graduates for careers across a wide range of fields, including law, journalism, international relations, the civil service, diplomacy, education, and business, particularly where work requires both rigorous analytical thinking and the ability to communicate across language and cultural boundaries. Postgraduate study in philosophy, Hispanic studies, languages, or related humanities fields is also a well-trodden path for graduates who wish to continue their academic development.
