About this course

Philosophy, business, and ethics is a combination that addresses one of the most pressing questions facing contemporary organisations: not just what organisations can do, but what they should do. Philosophy provides the analytical tools for thinking carefully about values, arguments, and principles. Business studies grounds those tools in the real world of organisations, markets, and strategy.

Ethics applies philosophical reasoning to the decisions that businesses and their leaders actually face, from corporate governance and sustainability to technology, labour practices, and the public interest. The result is a degree that is both intellectually serious and professionally relevant.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Reading includes placement experience, giving you time working in a professional setting where you can observe and reflect on how organisations actually navigate ethical and strategic challenges. You will study the major traditions in moral and political philosophy, the theory and practice of business management, and the applied ethics of specific areas such as corporate social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and the ethics of finance and technology. The programme develops your ability to construct and evaluate arguments rigorously, to understand the context and constraints within which business decisions are made, and to bring both critical thinking and practical awareness to complex situations.

Graduates from this programme pursue a wide range of careers, including management consultancy, corporate governance, compliance and risk, public policy, the law, and roles in sustainability and corporate responsibility. Many employers are actively looking for graduates who can think clearly about values and navigate the ethical dimensions of commercial life, and a degree in philosophy, business, and ethics directly addresses that need. Further study options include MBA programmes, postgraduate degrees in ethics and philosophy, law conversion courses, and qualifications in specific areas of business practice.
