Philosophy Ethics and Religion

Philosophy, ethics, and religion is a discipline that takes the most fundamental questions about human existence seriously and examines them with the analytical rigour that they deserve. How should we live? What can we really know?

What is the basis of moral obligation? Can religious belief be rationally justified? These are not merely ancient puzzles but live questions that shape how individuals and societies make choices, and engaging with them carefully develops intellectual capacities that are broadly transferable and genuinely valued.

At Southampton this three-year full-time programme provides the opportunity to engage with questions that have puzzled great thinkers for millennia and are still relevant today. You will study across philosophy, applied ethics, and the academic study of religion, exploring how these three disciplines intersect and illuminate each other. Ethics connects philosophy to practical questions about how we should act, including debates about global poverty, environmental ethics, medical ethics, and social justice.

The philosophy of religion examines whether and how religious belief can be justified, and what role religion plays in public and private life. You will develop the ability to construct rigorous arguments, evaluate competing positions, and write with precision and clarity on questions that are both deeply contested and genuinely important.

Graduates find careers across an unusually wide range of fields. Education, the civil service, law, journalism, charity and faith organisations, healthcare ethics, social policy, philosophy in schools, and academic research are among the most common destinations. The analytical skills and ethical reasoning the programme develops are valued wherever careful thinking about contested questions is required.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, theology, religious studies, bioethics, or law, or pursue professional training in teaching, counselling, or social work.
