Philosophy

Philosophy has a claim to be the oldest academic discipline and remains one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding. It asks questions that other disciplines take for granted: What is knowledge and how is it possible? What is the nature of reality, of mind, of meaning?

What makes actions morally right or wrong? What do we owe to each other, and why? The value of philosophical training lies not only in engaging with these questions but in the rigour and precision of the methods used to do so: careful reading of complex arguments, the construction of valid reasoning, the identification of assumptions and their implications, and the communication of positions with precision and economy.

At the University of Bristol, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route before students move into the main degree. Bristol offers both depth and breadth across three years of study, covering the major areas of philosophy: epistemology and philosophy of science, metaphysics, ethics and political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and the history of philosophy from ancient Greece through the early modern period to the present. Bristol's philosophy department has strong research profiles across these areas, and the teaching reflects that intellectual seriousness.

The programme prepares students to a high level of attainment, and graduates are well prepared for postgraduate study in philosophy and many other subjects, as the current description notes.

The foundation year provides academic preparation for those who have not taken A-level philosophy or who want a more gradual transition into the demands of philosophical study at degree level.
