Philosophy

Philosophy at Cambridge is the sustained, rigorous investigation of some of the deepest questions it is possible to ask: what can we know and how can we know it, what exists and how is reality structured, what makes an action right or wrong, what is the nature of mind and consciousness, and on what grounds can political authority be justified. These questions have been asked across cultures for thousands of years, and philosophy's distinctive method is to approach them not through experiment or revelation but through argument, analysis and the close examination of concepts and assumptions.

You will study for three years full-time, exploring the nature of knowledge and belief, the foundations of logic and language, the metaphysics of identity and causation, the philosophy of mind, ethics and political theory. Cambridge's approach to philosophy is rigorous and analytical, training you to read complex arguments carefully, identify hidden assumptions, construct precise counterarguments and communicate ideas with exceptional clarity. You will engage with major figures in the history of philosophy alongside contemporary work at the frontier of the discipline, developing a sense of how philosophical problems have evolved and why they remain live questions.

Law, finance, management consulting, the civil service, journalism, policy research, ethics advisory roles, technology companies and academia all recruit philosophy graduates.
