Philosophy

Philosophy is concerned with some of the most fundamental questions humans have ever asked: whether God exists, how the mind relates to the body, what we can know about the external world, what makes actions morally right or wrong, and what justice requires of us in our political and social arrangements. These are not merely abstract puzzles; they bear on every domain of human life, from how we understand ourselves to how we organise society and what we owe one another. Studying philosophy develops the ability to think precisely, read critically, and construct arguments that can withstand scrutiny, skills that transfer across an exceptionally wide range of professions and contexts.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time BA in Philosophy engages with both the history of philosophical thought and contemporary debates across epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind and language. You will encounter major figures in the philosophical tradition and learn to read their arguments closely and critically, while also engaging with the questions that animate current philosophical research. Southampton's philosophy department has a strong research profile, and the teaching reflects live debates in the field.

A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study philosophy in another academic environment and to experience how the discipline is approached in a different tradition.

Philosophy graduates are in strong demand across many careers, precisely because analytical and argumentative skills are so broadly applicable. Law, the civil service, finance, management consultancy, journalism, publishing, policy, and education are all common destinations. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, law, or interdisciplinary fields, and some develop academic careers as philosophers and researchers.
