Philosophy is the discipline that examines the most fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, value, and reason. What can we know, and how? What is the nature of reality, consciousness, and free will?

What makes actions right or wrong, and what grounds obligations to others? What is the nature of language and meaning? These are not merely academic puzzles but questions that run beneath the surface of every serious intellectual enterprise, and the tools that philosophy develops, including logical rigour, conceptual analysis, and the capacity to construct and evaluate arguments, are among the most transferable in higher education.

At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students whose prior study has not fully prepared them for immediate degree-level work. Sussex has a long tradition of progressive, interdisciplinary philosophy, and from your first day you will work alongside professional philosophers and engage with the ideas and debates that define contemporary philosophical inquiry. The programme ranges across the major areas of philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of language, and you will also engage with the history of philosophy from ancient Greece through the modern period to the present.

The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing substantial breadth of experience across the full four years. Industry partners engaged with the programme create opportunities to explore how philosophical skills and frameworks apply in professional contexts, from technology ethics to business strategy and policy development.
