Philosophy

Philosophy is the discipline that takes nothing for granted. It examines the foundations of knowledge, the nature of reality, the basis of ethical judgement, the structure of political authority and the questions about mind and consciousness that resist straightforward empirical answer. Where other disciplines begin from accepted frameworks and build on them, philosophy asks whether those frameworks hold and what would follow if they did not.

At the University of York this three-year programme encourages you to form your own views on these fundamental questions through disciplined argument and careful engagement with the philosophical tradition.

You will study logic, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, ethics, political philosophy and the history of philosophy, learning to construct and evaluate arguments with precision and to engage seriously with positions very different from your own. York's department is research-active, and the programme reflects current philosophical work rather than limiting itself to received canonical positions. A sandwich year and work placements are built into the programme, providing professional experience in a range of settings where the analytical skills philosophy develops are valued.

A year abroad gives you the opportunity to engage with philosophical traditions and academic cultures in a different country, which can be particularly illuminating for a discipline whose tradition is genuinely international.

Philosophy graduates are consistently valued by employers who want people who can think clearly under pressure, construct rigorous arguments and engage honestly with difficult questions. Law, the civil service, management consultancy, financial analysis, policy research, journalism, teaching and academic research are among the most common career destinations. Many philosophy graduates go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, politics, cognitive science or ethics, building on the analytical foundation the undergraduate degree provides.

Some pursue professional careers in bioethics, technology ethics or public policy, where the philosophical training is directly relevant to the questions the work raises.
