About this course

BA Philosophy with Human Rights brings philosophy together with one of its most powerful practical ideas: that all human beings have the same rights. Philosophy with Human Rights is an undergraduate degree that brings philosophy together with one of its most influential practical ideas: that all human beings possess the same fundamental rights. This idea underpins many modern political, legal and social systems, and forms the core of this course.

You will gain a strong grounding in philosophy while also studying human rights from philosophical, political, legal and sociological perspectives. By graduation, you will have developed the ability to think critically about ethical principles, justice and freedom, and how these ideas apply to real-world human rights challenges. This course allows you to explore the moral and philosophical foundations of human rights, asking why rights matter, how they can be justified, and how they should be protected.

You will examine competing theories of ethics, justice and freedom, and consider how philosophical ideas shape contemporary human rights debates. By combining philosophical theory with applied human rights study, the course develops your ability to analyse complex moral and political questions, evaluate arguments and engage thoughtfully with global issues such as inequality, freedom of expression and social justice.
