Photography is simultaneously one of the world's most ubiquitous practices and one of its most sophisticated art forms. A degree in photography goes far beyond technical competence with the camera: it develops your understanding of visual culture and visual communication, your ability to use light, composition, and timing to create images that say something, and your critical awareness of photography's role in society, from documentary evidence and journalistic record to fine art and commercial design.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme invites you to explore visual culture, visual communications, lighting, graphic communication, and art practices, while focusing on the role of the photographer in society. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional photography or visual media context before your final year. Work placement is also part of the degree.

These professional experiences are central to your development as a photographer: building a body of work and professional connections while still studying is one of the most effective ways to prepare for a career in a competitive field. You will develop technical skills in studio and location photography, digital post-production, and the conceptual and critical understanding needed to make and contextualise your own photographic work.

The programme's breadth means you can develop across editorial, documentary, commercial, and fine art photography, following your interests while building the versatile portfolio that professional practice requires.

Graduates go on to work as photographers in editorial, fashion, portraiture, documentary, commercial, and advertising contexts, as well as in related roles in visual communications, art direction, and digital media. Many develop freelance practices alongside employed roles. Postgraduate study in photography or visual arts is an option for those wishing to develop their practice or pursue research.
