Photography
Photography sits at the intersection of technical skill, visual intelligence, and cultural commentary. A serious photography degree goes far beyond mastering equipment: it asks you to think about what images do in the world, how they construct meaning, how they document and interpret reality, and how the discipline connects to art history, journalism, commercial communication, and documentary practice. This three-year full-time degree at the University of Salford aims to produce flexible, resourceful photographers with the creative confidence and critical understanding to work across both commercial and fine-art contexts.
You will build a solid grounding in photographic theory and practice, developing technical proficiency across analogue and digital processes while simultaneously exploring the conceptual and cultural frameworks that give photographic work its significance. The programme encourages you to take creative risks and pursue your own ideas, developing a distinctive artistic voice alongside a set of adaptable professional skills. You will engage with the history and theory of photography, understanding how the medium has evolved and how contemporary photographers position their work in relation to those traditions.
Practical projects give you the opportunity to realise your creative potential across portraiture, documentary, commercial, fine art, and other photographic genres.
A typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points reflects a programme that values creative promise alongside academic preparation. Graduates from photography degrees move into careers in commercial photography, photojournalism, documentary work, fine art practice, art direction, image editing, exhibition and gallery work, arts education, and digital media. Many graduates also work as freelance practitioners, building portfolio careers that span multiple photographic disciplines.
Some continue to postgraduate study in photography, fine art, or visual communication, developing their practice and critical thinking to a more advanced level.
