About this course

Photography has evolved from a documentary medium into one of the most versatile and contested forms of visual art and communication. From fine art photography that belongs in galleries to photojournalism that shapes public understanding of the world, from commercial fashion photography to portrait work that captures individual identity, the range of what the medium can do is vast. A degree in photography at this level is both a technical education and a critical and creative one, developing your ability to see, to make meaningful images, and to understand what photographs mean and do in the world.

At the University of the West of England in Bristol you will develop your visual voice in a creative city that has a strong connection to visual culture. You will work with industry-standard studios and equipment, engage with live briefs that connect your work to real professional contexts, and build a portfolio that demonstrates your range and your distinct creative approach. The programme covers photographic technique, critical theory, the history of photography, and professional practice, ensuring you graduate with both creative confidence and contextual understanding.

You will build professional connections during your studies and leave with a portfolio capable of competing in the editorial, fashion, fine art, commercial, and documentary arenas.

Graduates pursue careers as editorial, fashion, fine art, documentary, portrait, and commercial photographers, as well as in picture editing, art direction, gallery curation, photography education, and visual communications. Bristol's creative industries and the programme's professional connections provide a strong launch pad. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in photography, fine art, or visual communications, or build portfolio careers that combine photography with other visual and creative practice.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the final show is a proper platform — industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city — local cost of
