Physical Geography and Environment

Physical geography and environment is the scientific study of the Earth's physical processes, landscapes, and the environmental systems that support life on the planet. It sits at the boundary between the natural sciences and the social and policy dimensions of environmental challenges, examining glaciers, rivers, and coastal systems alongside climate change, ecology, and sustainability. Physical geographers seek to understand how landscapes have formed and are changing, what drives environmental hazard and risk, and how human activity is altering the systems on which all life depends.

At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme is the placement year variant, meaning it includes a period of professional experience embedded within the four years. You will develop a thorough scientific understanding of physical geography, studying geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, biogeography, and environmental science, and developing the quantitative and fieldwork skills that geographical research demands. York's programme connects your studies to current environmental challenges: climate change and its physical consequences, the management of rivers and coasts, the dynamics of glacial systems, and the intersection of ecology and land management are all central to the curriculum.

A year abroad is also part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to encounter physical environments very different from those of the UK and to study at an international partner institution.

You will develop skills in fieldwork, data collection and analysis, geographic information systems, scientific writing, and the critical evaluation of environmental evidence, all of which are highly valued in professional environmental contexts.

Graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, national parks, water management, climate science, planning, and government environmental agencies. Many also move into teaching, research, and international environmental organisations.
