About this course

Physical geography examines the natural systems that shape the Earth's surface and the processes that drive change within them. It encompasses geomorphology, the study of how landscapes form and evolve; climatology and meteorology; ecology and biogeography; hydrology; glaciology; and the long-term environmental history recorded in soils, sediments, and ice cores. Physical geography connects natural science with genuine urgency: understanding how climate change is altering landscapes, intensifying floods and droughts, and affecting biodiversity is one of the most consequential intellectual tasks of the present moment.

At Liverpool Hope this three-year full-time programme provides a thorough grounding in the major systems and processes of physical geography, including geomorphology, ecology, geology, biodiversity, sustainability, and environmental change. You will study both modern environmental processes and the long-term evolution of landscapes, developing an understanding of how natural systems operate across a range of timescales and how they are responding to current pressures. Field investigation and quantitative methods are central to the programme, giving you the practical skills to investigate environmental questions in real settings.

A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional experience, international study, and a practical portfolio alongside your academic knowledge.

Graduates move into careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, flood risk management, government environmental agencies, natural hazard assessment, climate services, research, and education. Many go on to postgraduate study in physical geography, environmental science, or related disciplines, building the specialist expertise that research and senior professional roles require.
