Physical Geography

Physical Geography is the scientific study of the Earth's natural systems and the processes that shape them. It sits at the intersection of the physical sciences and the environmental sciences, drawing on geology, climatology, ecology, hydrology and geomorphology to understand how landscapes form and change, how climate systems operate, and how natural and human forces interact to drive environmental change at scales ranging from the local to the global. In an era of intensifying climate impacts, growing resource pressures and increasing frequency of natural hazards, physical geographers are among the scientists best placed to contribute to understanding and responding to these challenges.

At Swansea University, this full-time three-year BSc programme gives you a broad and research-informed grounding in the Earth's physical systems, bringing together themes from physical geography, environmental science and geology. You will explore climate change, natural hazards, pollution, coastal management, wildfires and geophysics, developing both a strong conceptual foundation and practical fieldwork and laboratory skills. Fieldwork is an essential part of physical geography education, taking you out of the classroom to observe and measure real environments directly and to develop the data collection, analysis and interpretation skills that professional practice demands.

Graduates from Physical Geography programmes pursue careers in environmental consultancy, climate science, natural hazard assessment, coastal and floodplain management, conservation, environmental regulation and the public sector. Government agencies, environmental charities, engineering consultancies, water utilities and international development organisations all employ physical geographers. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study or research, particularly in areas such as climate modelling, geomorphology, remote sensing and environmental management, where specialist expertise is increasingly in demand.
