About this course

Physician associates are qualified healthcare professionals who work alongside doctors to provide a range of medical and clinical services under the supervision and direction of a named physician. They take medical histories, perform examinations, diagnose conditions, develop and manage treatment plans, and request and interpret investigations. The role was developed in the United States before being introduced to the UK, where it has grown significantly as the NHS seeks to expand its clinical workforce and address demand for healthcare services.

Physician associates are now employed across a wide range of settings including primary care, acute medicine, emergency departments, and specialist services.

At Edge Hill University, this four-year full-time programme prepares you for entry to the profession through a rigorous curriculum that combines scientific and clinical knowledge with extensive supervised practice. You will study anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and the full breadth of clinical medicine from the ground up, developing the diagnostic reasoning and clinical skills needed to work safely and effectively as a physician associate. Clinical placements in a range of NHS settings form a core part of the programme, ensuring you develop hands-on competence alongside theoretical understanding.

The typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the academic demands of a programme that leads to a regulated clinical role.

Graduates of physician associate programmes are eligible to sit the national examination for physician associates and, on passing, to register with the relevant professional body and practise under physician supervision. Career opportunities exist across the NHS in hospitals and general practice, with physician associates increasingly employed in specialist medicine, surgery, and emergency care. The role offers a clinical career with clear professional development pathways, and many physician associates develop specialisms as their careers progress.

Further postgraduate development, including specialist practice programmes, is available for those who want to develop their expertise in particular clinical areas.
