About this course

Physics and mathematics are natural partners: physics seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe, and mathematics provides the language in which those laws are expressed. Together they form one of the most rigorous and intellectually demanding combinations in higher education, developing the capacity for precise reasoning, quantitative analysis, and the kind of deep engagement with structure and pattern that characterises both disciplines at their best.

At the University of Liverpool, this three-year full-time programme allows you to develop genuine expertise in both subjects side by side. In physics, you will explore the core areas of the discipline: classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, special relativity, and the physics of materials and particles. In mathematics, you will engage with analysis, algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics, and more advanced topics in applied mathematics.

The two subjects reinforce each other throughout: the mathematical tools you develop inform your physical understanding, and the physical problems you encounter give concrete motivation for the mathematical structures you study. You will also develop strong skills in scientific computing and data analysis, which are central to modern work in both fields.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner university overseas. This is both an academic and a personal broadening experience, exposing you to different approaches to teaching and research in physics and mathematics, and developing your independence and adaptability in a new environment.

The combination of physics and mathematics opens a very wide range of careers. Research in fundamental or applied science, academic careers in physics or mathematics, and roles in the technology sector including software development and data science are all well-established routes. Finance and quantitative analysis draw heavily on graduates with strong mathematical and physical reasoning skills, as do industries including energy, aerospace, telecommunications, and advanced manufacturing.

Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in physics, mathematics, astrophysics, mathematical finance, data science, or interdisciplinary research areas that benefit from the rigour of both disciplines.
