About this course

Physics is often described as the most fundamental of the sciences, seeking to understand the deepest laws governing matter, energy, space and time. From the behaviour of subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe, physicists develop the conceptual frameworks and mathematical tools that other sciences build on. The discipline has also driven technological transformation for centuries, from electromagnetism and thermodynamics to quantum mechanics and relativity, and it continues to underpin advances in computing, communications, medical imaging, energy and materials.

At the University of Leeds this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study physics at a partner institution in another country and to develop your academic and personal adaptability in an international setting. You will build strong foundations in classical and modern physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and special relativity, before moving into more advanced territory in areas such as condensed matter, astrophysics, particle physics or photonics. Laboratory work is integral throughout, and you will develop skills in experimental design, data analysis and scientific communication alongside the theoretical material.

The international year adds both a cultural dimension and the experience of engaging with physics in a different academic environment.

Physics graduates are among the most employable of all science graduates, partly because the rigour of the subject signals strong mathematical and analytical capability to employers across many sectors. Careers in research and development, engineering, computing, data science, finance, actuarial work, consultancy, energy, defence and medical physics are all established paths. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate research, taking master's or doctoral programmes in physics, astrophysics, materials science, engineering physics or related areas.

Teaching is another important destination, with physics teachers in consistent demand in secondary schools and sixth forms.
