About this course

Quantum technology is one of the most exciting and consequential frontiers in contemporary science, applying the counterintuitive principles of quantum mechanics to develop technologies that could transform computing, communications, sensing, and medicine in the coming decades. Quantum computers exploit superposition and entanglement to solve certain classes of problem far faster than any classical machine. Quantum cryptography enables communications that are in principle unbreakable.

Quantum sensors can measure physical quantities with unprecedented precision. The physics underlying these technologies is well-established, but the engineering challenge of translating it into reliable, scalable devices is substantial and still being met.

At the University of Sussex, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and is specifically designed to engage with quantum technology as both a scientific and engineering challenge. The foundation year provides a supported preparation in physics and mathematics before the main degree, making the programme accessible to students who want to build their scientific foundations before engaging with the advanced content. You will study quantum mechanics, solid state physics, atomic and molecular physics, and the mathematical methods that underpin all of these, alongside specialist content in quantum information, quantum computing, and the experimental techniques used to build and test quantum devices.

Sussex has particular research strengths in quantum technology, providing an excellent environment for this programme.

Graduates are well-placed for careers in the rapidly growing quantum technology sector, which encompasses start-ups, technology companies, defence contractors, national laboratories, and government agencies with interests in quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum sensing. Many graduates pursue postgraduate research, as the field is still at an early stage of maturity and academic research is central to its development. The strong physics and mathematical training the programme provides also opens pathways into data science, finance, engineering, and any other field that values rigorous quantitative reasoning.
