About this course

Physics is the discipline that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the natural world, from the behaviour of the smallest subatomic particles to the structure and evolution of the cosmos. It is built on mathematics, experiment, and the ambition to find the simplest and most general explanations for the phenomena we observe. Quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, classical mechanics, and cosmology are the core areas of the discipline, and their methods and ideas underpin a remarkable range of technologies from mobile communications to medical imaging.

At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme is designed to help you discover how the universe works while building the practical and data-driven skills that employers value. You will study the major areas of physics alongside mathematics, computational methods, and laboratory work. The degree develops your ability to model physical systems, design and carry out experiments, interpret data rigorously, and communicate your findings clearly.

Kent's physics department has a strong research culture, and the teaching reflects current developments in areas such as astrophysics, condensed matter, and quantum physics.

The emphasis on practical and data skills means that you develop capabilities that are valued well beyond the physics sector itself. Physicists are known for their analytical rigour and their ability to work with complex quantitative problems, and these attributes make them competitive in many different labour markets.

Graduates go on to work in research, engineering, data science, finance, software development, defence, space technology, and a wide range of other sectors. The analytical and mathematical foundation a physics degree provides is highly regarded by employers across industries. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study, including MPhys, MSc, or PhD programmes in physics or related fields, as the route to specialist academic or industrial research careers.

Highly recommend
The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city…

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you sh…
