About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with the laws that govern matter, energy, space and time at every scale from the subatomic to the cosmological. It provides the conceptual and mathematical foundations on which chemistry, engineering, materials science and much of technology ultimately rest. Studying physics trains you to think precisely about complex systems, to construct and test theoretical models, and to move between abstract mathematics and experimental reality, skills that are valued far beyond the laboratory.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time programme takes you from the core principles of classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and relativity through to specialist topics that reflect Leicester's research strengths in areas such as space science and astrophysics. You will develop strong mathematical skills and gain hands-on laboratory experience alongside your theoretical studies. The course includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, so you can spend time in a professional research or industrial environment and study at an international institution, both of which deepen your perspective on the discipline and its applications.

Work placement opportunities are also integrated into the programme.

Physics graduates are among the most employable of all science graduates, precisely because the skills the degree develops are so broadly applicable. Many work in research and development in sectors including aerospace, defence, energy, telecommunications and medical technology. Others move into finance, data analysis, software engineering, consultancy or science communication.
