About this course

Physics is among the most fundamental of all the sciences, concerned with understanding the nature of matter, energy, space, and time at every scale from subatomic particles to the structure of the cosmos. It is a discipline that has repeatedly transformed human understanding, from the Newtonian mechanics that made the industrial revolution possible through the quantum mechanics that underlies all modern electronics to the theory of general relativity that underpins GPS and our understanding of black holes. Studying it to degree level develops a rigorous way of thinking about the world that is valuable far beyond physics itself.

At Bristol, which is ranked among the UK's top institutions for physics research, you will build a thorough grounding in the core areas of the discipline including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, thermodynamics, and relativity, before moving into more specialised areas in your later years. The programme is offered with a foundation year, making it accessible to students whose prior qualifications in mathematics and physics need to be developed before degree-level study begins. This foundation year provides rigorous academic preparation so that you enter the main programme fully ready to engage with its intellectual demands.

The three-year main programme then provides the depth and breadth that a physics degree from a research-intensive institution should offer.
