About this course

Physics is the discipline that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing matter, energy, and the forces that shape the universe. From quantum mechanics and particle physics to astrophysics and condensed matter, it is a field of extraordinary scope and depth, one that sits at the foundation of all natural science and underpins the technologies that define modern life. Studying physics develops not only a deep understanding of the physical world but also the mathematical and analytical skills that are among the most transferable in any degree.

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, and is rooted in a research-active environment where students engage with a modern, forward-looking physics community. Strathclyde has particular strengths in applied and technological physics, and the programme combines rigorous coverage of core physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and statistical physics, with exposure to contemporary research areas and applications. The year abroad gives you the experience of working in a different academic culture and often in a language other than English, which broadens your perspective considerably and strengthens your adaptability.

You will develop strong mathematical reasoning, experimental technique, and the ability to solve unfamiliar problems from first principles. These are skills that translate far beyond academic physics.

Many physics graduates from programmes like this pursue postgraduate research in physics, engineering, or materials science. Others move into careers in technology, computing, and software development, in defence and security, in finance and quantitative analysis, or in energy and environmental research. Teaching is a common route, as physics teachers are consistently in demand.

Strathclyde's emphasis on applied physics and its industrial connections also make graduates attractive to companies in photonics, medical technology, and manufacturing.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the ci…

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good …
