About this course

Physics is the science that asks the deepest questions about the nature of reality: what matter and energy are, how forces operate, how the universe began and how it will end, and what the fundamental laws are that govern everything from subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. It is the most mathematically demanding of the natural sciences, and it develops exceptional analytical and quantitative skills that are valuable across a very wide range of careers, far beyond physics itself.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this part-time programme develops your understanding of classical and modern physics, from Newtonian mechanics and electromagnetism through to quantum theory, relativity, and the physics of materials and condensed matter systems. The programme includes a sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement, giving you direct professional experience in a physics, engineering, or technology environment and international exposure to how the discipline is practised in different scientific communities. The part-time mode gives you flexibility to study alongside employment or other commitments.

Physics graduates are valued by employers across an exceptionally wide range of sectors: finance, data science, technology, engineering, research, energy, defence, healthcare physics, and science communication all draw on the analytical and quantitative skills the degree develops. The work placement and year abroad strengthen your professional profile and industry understanding. Many graduates continue to postgraduate research in physics or applied sciences, or pursue careers in technology and engineering that draw on their scientific foundations.
