About this course

Physics is the foundational science that seeks to understand the laws governing the universe, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the dynamics of galaxies. It combines deep mathematical theory with experimental investigation, and its discoveries have driven technological revolutions in computing, communications, energy, and medicine. Studying physics develops a way of thinking about the world that is precise, rigorous, and surprisingly versatile in its applications.

At the University of York, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year in industry, giving you the opportunity to spend a full year working in a professional environment where physics knowledge is applied. You will gain a thorough grounding in scientific principles and methods, investigating subjects including nanosystems, semiconductors, fusion plasmas, biophysics, and quantum computing, which reflects York's particular research strengths in these contemporary areas of physics. A year abroad option is also available, allowing you to study physics in another country and to encounter different research cultures and approaches.
