About this course

Physics with advanced research is an integrated master's pathway designed for students who wish to enter research-intensive careers with both the theoretical depth of a full physics education and extended research training beyond the standard degree. Physics is the fundamental science of matter, energy, space, and time, developing the mathematical and conceptual tools to describe everything from subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the universe. The advanced research extension deepens this foundation with further specialisation and a significantly extended final-year research project, building the skills that doctoral programmes and industrial research roles demand.

At Strathclyde, this five-year integrated master's extends the MPhys course with additional specialisation in the university's research areas and a more substantial research experience. You will develop a thorough understanding of classical and modern physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and statistical physics, before progressing to advanced topics and specialist research modules. The extended final-year project gives you genuine research experience at the frontier of the discipline, working under the supervision of research-active staff and contributing to real scientific enquiry.

The degree includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and to experience physics research in a different academic environment, which is particularly relevant for a research-oriented pathway in an internationally connected discipline.

Graduates of physics programmes with extended research training are particularly well placed for doctoral study in physics, applied mathematics, or engineering, and for research careers in academia, national laboratories, and the technology industry. The combination of strong theoretical foundations and real research experience is sought by employers in photonics, semiconductor research, defence, space technology, and precision instrumentation.
