About this course

Physics with astrophysics is a degree that combines the fundamental science of matter, energy, and physical law with the study of the universe at its largest scales, from stars and galaxies to black holes, dark matter, and the origin and fate of the cosmos itself. Astrophysics applies physical principles to understand objects and phenomena that exist far beyond the reach of any instrument we can physically dispatch, making it a discipline that depends on theoretical insight, mathematical modelling, and the careful analysis of light and other emissions from distant objects. The combination gives you rigorous physics training alongside the specific knowledge and observation skills that cosmological and astronomical investigation requires.

At the University of Kent, this three-year full-time programme gives you the tools to understand the physical world at a fundamental level, and to apply those tools to the cosmos. You will have access to dedicated astrophysics laboratory modules and to the Beacon Observatory at Kent, giving you direct observational experience. The programme develops your understanding of quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and the full range of classical physics, alongside specialist content in stellar physics, galactic structure, cosmology, and the physics of the solar system and planetary science.

You will develop strong mathematical and analytical skills, proficiency in data analysis and computational methods, and the physical intuition needed to work with phenomena at extreme scales. These are highly transferable capabilities.

Graduates from physics with astrophysics programmes pursue careers in research, data science, computing, finance, defence, aerospace, and telecommunications. The analytical and quantitative skills are among the most broadly valued in the graduate market. Many graduates continue to postgraduate research in astrophysics, physics, or computational science.
