About this course

Physics with astrophysics is a degree for students who want to understand not just the laws that govern matter and energy on Earth but the extraordinary structures and events that arise when those laws operate across cosmic scales. Astrophysics studies the origins of the universe, the formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, and planets, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, and the extreme environments of black holes, neutron stars, and supernovae. It is a discipline where the most abstract physics is tested in the most spectacular physical conditions, and where computational and observational techniques combine with theoretical reasoning to produce some of the most remarkable scientific knowledge humanity has accumulated.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in core physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and relativity, before developing the astrophysical specialisms that distinguish this degree. You will learn to combine physical understanding with advanced computational techniques, using simulations and data analysis to observe and model the universe. You will study how stars form and die, how galaxies evolve, what the cosmic microwave background tells us about the Big Bang, and how planets form in protoplanetary discs around young stars.

A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution with complementary research strengths.

With a typical entry tariff of 168 UCAS points, this is a competitive degree that attracts students with strong mathematical and scientific ability and a fascination with the universe.
