About this course

Physics with astrophysics combines the fundamental discipline of physics with the science that applies physical laws to the largest scales imaginable. Physics is the study of matter, energy, space and time, and the forces and interactions that govern everything from subatomic particles to everyday objects. Astrophysics extends that understanding outwards to stars, galaxies, black holes, neutron stars, the Big Bang and the large-scale structure of the universe, using the same physical principles to address questions about the origin and fate of the cosmos.

Together they develop a depth of quantitative and conceptual thinking that is among the most rigorous in any undergraduate degree.

At the University of Bristol you will study physics with astrophysics over three years of full-time study, in a department with a strong research reputation and excellent facilities for both teaching and discovery. You will build from the foundations of classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics to more advanced topics in astrophysics, cosmology and observational astronomy. The mathematical training runs throughout the programme, developing the quantitative skills that physics demands.
