About this course

Physics and astrophysics together give you the intellectual tools to understand the universe from the smallest subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Physics is the foundational science of the natural world, providing the mathematical and conceptual frameworks that explain how matter, energy, and forces behave at every scale. Astrophysics applies those frameworks to the grandest scales of all: the formation and evolution of stars, galaxies, and the universe itself, probing questions about dark matter, black holes, cosmic expansion, and the origins of everything.

At the University of Kent this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a dedicated preparatory year that gives you the knowledge and skills needed to enter any of Kent's physics, astrophysics, astronomy, or space science degrees. The foundation year is designed for students who are drawn to physics and astrophysics but want a more gradual and supported introduction to the mathematical and scientific demands of the subject before moving into the full degree curriculum. You will then progress into the combined honours degree, studying the core areas of physics alongside the astronomical observations, cosmological theory, and astrophysical modelling that characterise the astrophysics component.

Graduates of physics with astrophysics work in research institutes, space agencies, technology companies, data science, finance, education, and a wide range of sectors where the deep mathematical and analytical skills the degree develops are valued. Many move into careers in the space sector, in observatories, or in research roles at universities and institutes. Others apply their quantitative training in data science, engineering, meteorology, software development, or the financial sector.

Teaching physics at secondary level is also a well-trodden and consistently in-demand path. Further study at Masters or doctoral level in astrophysics, physics, or a related discipline is the natural route for those whose interest is in pursuing research or academic careers.
