About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with understanding the laws that govern the universe from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest structures in the cosmos. It asks how matter and energy behave, what space and time are, and how the four fundamental forces shape everything from the behaviour of electrons to the evolution of stars. The discipline combines mathematical rigour with experimental investigation, and it generates not just theoretical understanding but the technological innovations, from lasers and semiconductors to medical imaging and GPS, that have defined modern life.

At the University of Surrey, this four-year, full-time BSc programme includes a foundation year, providing a thorough grounding in the mathematical and scientific knowledge needed before you enter the main degree. This is an important feature for students who have the aptitude and motivation for physics but who benefit from additional preparation, whether because of gaps in prior study, non-traditional educational backgrounds, or the simply demanding nature of the transition to university-level physics.
