About this course

Physics is the foundational science: it seeks to understand the most basic laws governing matter, energy, space, and time, and in doing so provides the bedrock on which all other natural sciences rest. At the University of Southampton, the BSc Physics with Foundation Year runs over four years of full-time study, with the foundation year providing the mathematical and scientific preparation students need before entering the full physics degree. As the programme's current description notes, you will explore the physical theories that help us understand the universe, from quantum mechanics and electromagnetism to relativity and cosmology, while developing advanced analytical, mathematical, and computing skills that are valued across a wide range of professions.

The degree takes you from the ideas encountered at A-level into the mathematical rigour and conceptual sophistication that characterises university physics. You will engage with classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and wave theory in the early stages, before moving into quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, condensed matter, and the physics of the cosmos. Practical laboratory work develops your experimental skills and your ability to design, conduct, and analyse physical measurements.

Computing is increasingly central to physics, and you will develop the ability to write and use computational tools for modelling physical systems and analysing data. The foundation year ensures that students who need additional preparation can access the full degree with confidence and be well equipped for its demands.
