About this course

Physics is the science of matter, energy, space, and time at the most fundamental level. It seeks to understand the basic laws that govern the behaviour of the universe, from the subatomic particles inside a proton to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. The discipline is the foundation on which most of modern technology rests, from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging and renewable energy, and it continues to produce discoveries that reshape our understanding of the physical world.

At Aberystwyth, this four-year programme is accredited by the Institute of Physics and includes an integrated year in industry, giving you a full year of professional experience in a scientific, engineering, or technology setting as part of your degree. You will build a rigorous grounding in the core areas of physics, including classical mechanics, quantum theory, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and optics, while also developing practical laboratory skills and the mathematical competence that physics demands. The industrial year is a significant feature: it allows you to apply your knowledge in a professional context, to understand how physics is practised outside academia, and to build the experience and networks that employers value.

Aberystwyth's supportive learning environment and its location on the Welsh coast, while not directly part of the physics curriculum, contribute to a distinctive student experience.

Physics graduates are among the most versatile in the graduate labour market. The analytical and quantitative skills the degree develops are valued in engineering, data science, finance, consultancy, software development, research, and many other fields. Graduates specifically enter careers in aerospace, defence, energy, healthcare technology, telecommunications, and scientific research, as well as in sectors that prize quantitative rigour more broadly.
