About this course

Physics with medical imaging is a degree that brings together the fundamental science of matter, energy and the forces of nature with one of its most significant applied fields. Medical imaging, encompassing X-ray radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound and nuclear medicine, depends entirely on physical principles and has transformed diagnosis and treatment in modern healthcare. Understanding how these technologies work, how images are formed and interpreted, and how the physics of radiation and magnetism is harnessed for clinical purposes requires both rigorous scientific training and engagement with medical and biological contexts.

At the University of Nottingham, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which supports your transition into degree-level physics and medical science study. You will study the core areas of physics, including mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and optics, alongside dedicated study of the physics and technology of medical imaging modalities. You will examine how imaging systems are designed, how they produce and process image data, the biological effects of radiation, radiation safety and the clinical environments in which imaging takes place.

The programme develops strong analytical and mathematical skills alongside the practical laboratory abilities and the scientific reasoning that characterise a physics education. The medical imaging strand gives this technical foundation a clear applied direction.

Graduates go on to careers in medical physics, clinical science, radiography, healthcare technology, biomedical research, pharmaceutical companies and the technology industries that develop and manufacture imaging equipment. Some pursue clinical scientist training through NHS scientist training pathways, which leads to registration as a clinical scientist. Others go on to postgraduate study in medical physics, biomedical engineering or related fields.
