About this course

Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology is a degree for students who want to engage with the most fundamental questions in science: what are the basic constituents of matter, how did the universe begin, and what governs its large-scale structure and evolution? Particle physics investigates the elementary particles and forces from which everything is made, working at the frontier of quantum field theory, the Standard Model and experimental physics at the highest energies. Cosmology examines the origin, structure and fate of the universe itself, drawing on general relativity, observational astronomy and theoretical physics to construct and test models of cosmic evolution.

At Swansea University this three-year full-time BSc combines a comprehensive physics education with specialist content in particle physics and cosmology, using the language of mathematics to understand phenomena at the smallest and largest scales. You will develop the analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills that physics demands alongside the specific theoretical and observational knowledge needed to engage with cutting-edge questions in these two interconnected fields. Swansea has particular research strengths in particle physics and cosmology that inform the teaching programme.

Graduates from Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology degrees go on to careers in academic and industrial research, data science, computing, finance, engineering and technology. The mathematical fluency, computational skill and abstract reasoning that specialising in particle physics and cosmology develops are valued across a remarkably wide range of professional and scientific contexts. For those wishing to pursue research, the degree provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study in theoretical or experimental physics, astrophysics, cosmology or related mathematical sciences.

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the cit…

Genuinely worthwhile
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student c…
