About this course

Physics sits at the foundation of our understanding of the natural world, from the quantum behaviour of particles to the dynamics of stars and galaxies. It is a discipline that develops not just knowledge but a particular way of thinking: rigorous, quantitative, and comfortable with abstraction, yet always anchored in the desire to understand how things actually work. The breadth of what physics opens, both intellectually and professionally, makes it one of the most valuable undergraduate degrees available.

At Bath this four-year full-time programme, which includes either a professional placement or a year abroad, gives you the time and experience to develop as a physicist with genuine depth and with real-world perspective. You will study classical and quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, nuclear and particle physics, and advanced topics in your later years, developing both experimental and theoretical skills throughout. In your final year you will carry out a project from a wide range of options, including experimental, theoretical, and computational work, as well as possibilities for industry-connected or public engagement projects.

This project is a significant piece of independent scientific work that draws on everything you have learned.

The professional placement or year abroad provides sustained experience either in an industrial or research environment or at an international partner institution, depending on your choice. Work placements are embedded in the programme to ensure professional awareness runs throughout your studies.

Physics graduates are recognised across many sectors for their analytical rigour and quantitative fluency. Career paths include research, technology, engineering, data science, finance, consulting, and science policy, as well as academic careers through postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level. The combination of a strong physics degree with placement or international experience is a powerful platform for a wide range of professional paths.
