Ranked 6th in subjects aligned to Physics for ‘overall positivity’ in the NSS 2025 (according to Times Higher Education NSS 2024 methodology applied to the NSS 2025 data).

Physics is the study of matter, energy and the fundamental forces that govern the universe, from the tiniest subatomic particles to vast galaxies. Space science is the study of space technology and its use to explore the Solar System. The University of Leicester has a world-class reputation in space science, having contributed to numerous missions launched by NASA, ESA and other space agencies.

In fact, we can proudly boast that, since 1967, there has never been a moment when there was not at least one piece of Leicester-built equipment in orbit! Planetary probes with direct Leicester involvement include Cassini (Saturn), Juno (Jupiter), BepiColombo (Mercury) and ExoMars.
