About this course

Physics is the science of the fundamental laws governing the universe, from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest cosmic structures. It encompasses quantum mechanics, which describes the behaviour of matter and energy at the smallest scales, relativity, which reframes our understanding of space and time, and particle physics, which investigates the basic constituents of everything that exists. Physics lies at the heart of most modern technology, from semiconductors and lasers to medical imaging and communications infrastructure, and it provides the conceptual framework on which other natural sciences depend.

At Queen's University Belfast, this five-year full-time MSci degree combines a rigorous education in physics with the study of Spanish for students who wish to continue a language beyond school level. The physics curriculum covers the full range of the discipline, building from foundational mechanics and electromagnetism through to quantum theory and advanced topics in modern physics, while developing the mathematical skills that underpin all of it. The language element adds a genuinely valuable dimension: most frontier science happens in international collaborations, and the ability to communicate and operate in Spanish opens doors to a wide network of research communities in Europe and Latin America.

The programme includes a year studying abroad, giving you immersive experience in a country where your language is spoken while also broadening your scientific perspective through exposure to a different academic environment.

Physics graduates are among the most employable of any science discipline. Careers span research and development in industry and academia, engineering, data science, finance, technology, defence, and the energy sector. The quantitative and analytical skills that physics develops are transferable across many fields.

The addition of Spanish specifically broadens your options in international scientific and commercial contexts. Postgraduate study in physics, astrophysics, or related quantitative fields is a common path for those who wish to go deeper.
