Physics with Theoretical Physics

Physics with theoretical physics is for students who want to engage rigorously with the mathematical and conceptual foundations of the physical world. Theoretical physics constructs the mathematical frameworks that explain phenomena from the quantum behaviour of particles to the structure of spacetime, working at the frontier where observation meets abstraction. It demands exceptional mathematical fluency and the capacity to reason about systems that cannot be directly observed, and it has historically been the source of the most profound conceptual advances in our understanding of nature.

At King's College London, this three-year full-time programme also includes a year abroad, providing an opportunity to study physics in an international setting and broaden your academic experience. You will develop a thorough grounding in all the fundamental areas of modern physics, including relativity, quantum mechanics, fields and waves, electromagnetism, nuclear physics and particle physics. The theoretical physics component equips you with the advanced mathematical tools required for pursuing complex theoretical problems, including tensor calculus, group theory and advanced quantum theory.

You will develop key analytical and practical skills, including problem-solving, creative thinking, team work and data analysis, that prepare you both for research and for the wide range of careers in which physics training is valued.

With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, this is a rigorous and demanding programme. Graduates from physics with theoretical physics programmes go on to careers in scientific research, data science, finance, software engineering, engineering consultancy, the civil service and education. Many pursue doctoral study, including in theoretical physics, quantum computing, cosmology or adjacent mathematical sciences.
