About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the nature of matter, energy, space, and time from the smallest subatomic particles to the largest structures in the universe. Theoretical physics takes this project a step further, using mathematical frameworks of extraordinary power and elegance to build models of how the physical world works, often in ways that precede and predict experimental discovery. The history of physics is full of instances where abstract mathematical reasoning led directly to technology that changed the world: quantum mechanics underpins the transistor, relativity underpins GPS, and gauge theory underpins particle physics experiments at the frontier of knowledge.

At the University of Manchester, Physics with Theoretical Physics runs over three years in full-time mode, with a foundation year available for those who need to strengthen their scientific and mathematical preparation before entering the main degree. Manchester has one of the most distinguished physics departments in the UK, with a research environment that spans particle physics, condensed matter, astrophysics, and the physics of complex systems. You will receive a solid grounding in all aspects of physics, both theoretical and experimental, and the theoretical physics component is developed through lectures and substantial project work that builds your mathematical confidence and physical intuition together.

Theoretical physicists are among the most analytically capable graduates in any discipline, and the careers open to them reflect this. Many go into academic research, pursuing postgraduate study in physics, mathematics, or related fields at some of the world's leading institutions. Others move into quantitative finance, data science, software engineering, technology consultancy, and the defence and aerospace sectors, where the problem-solving and mathematical modelling skills the degree develops are highly valued.

The typical entry tariff is 168 points.
