About this course

Physiotherapy is a health profession dedicated to restoring and maintaining physical function and movement across the lifespan. Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory systems, working with patients who are recovering from surgery, sports injuries, strokes and accidents, managing chronic conditions, or living with disabilities. The profession is grounded in detailed anatomical and physiological knowledge, combined with evidence-based therapeutic techniques and the interpersonal skills that effective clinical relationships require.

At Birmingham Newman University this three-year full-time programme leads to a qualification that enables graduates to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a physiotherapist, which is the mandatory credential for practising the profession in the UK. The programme is built around the integration of clinical theory and practice: you will develop knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics and therapeutic exercise alongside direct experience with patients in clinical placement settings. As the course description states, physiotherapists play an integral role in healthcare, from helping patients recover from surgery, sports injuries, accidents and strokes to supporting people with disabilities and long-term illness, and the programme is designed to prepare you honestly for the full breadth of that clinical responsibility.

You will develop assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment planning skills, alongside communication and teamworking abilities that are essential in multidisciplinary healthcare environments. Manual therapy, exercise prescription, electrotherapy and patient education are all part of the clinical toolkit you will develop.

Registered physiotherapists work in NHS hospitals and community services, sports medicine, private practice, occupational health, care homes and international healthcare settings. Career development leads to specialist clinical roles, advanced practice, teaching and research. Many pursue postgraduate qualifications in specific clinical areas or in physiotherapy education.
